Over the years, ILAN has devoted considerable resources to developing sports programs for the physically handicapped, because ILAN believes strongly that rehabilitative sports are a crucial and inseparable part of treating the disabled individual. The physiological changes that result from participating in sports activities bring about psychological changes, which can, in turn, lead to social growth and significant improvement in self-image and self-confidence.
With facilities located throughout Israel, ILAN makes it possible for young children to start rehabilitation as soon as they are diagnosed with a disability and referred by their doctors for treatment. The therapeutic activities offered by ILAN include swimming, horseback riding, and dance, and competitive sports − using specially adapted equipment − such as tennis, ping-pong, and wheelchair basketball.
ILAN now operates two large sports centers, in Ramat Gan and in Qiriat Haim; both facilities meet the highest international standards. Since 2007, ILAN has been committing resources to encourage competitive and Olympic sports; this has included granting sports scholarships and subsidies for Paralympic athletes. ILAN’s sports program has produced some outstanding athletes. Nine ILAN athletes participated in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing and brought home four silver medals, in swimming and in tennis. ILAN athletes also competed in the 2012 London Paralympics.
