Sal-Gal is a unique form of wheelchair basketball, developed at ILAN's sports center in Ramat Gan. In Sal-Gal, disabled teenagers, who comprise about 60% of a team, play together with non-disabled players. All the players are in wheelchairs. The objective of Sal-Gal is that the handicapped players will come to see themselves as athletes, rather than disabled persons, and at the same time, the non-handicapped players will come to appreciate their handicapped teammates for their strengths, rather than focusing on their weaknesses. To recruit non-handicapped players, ILAN holds Sal-Gal demonstrations, with both veteran players and teenagers, in schools around the country.
Sal-Gal games are played within the structure of a national youth league. This is the first time a league for adolescent players has existed in Israel, and what is especially important is that this league includes both handicapped and non-handicapped youth.
